If there’s one thing I learned from my last weekend adventure, it’s that I need a little more time to plan. So, this week’s vote between Santorini or Mykonos and all future votes will be a couple of weeks out. That being said, I am excited to explore one of these wonderful islands while I stay in Greece for July. Both are equally gorgeous, but the beautiful beaches aren’t the only thing to see. Come explore with me to see which adventure you want to take me on.
Santorini
When people picture the Greek Islands, they usually have something like the picture above in their head. With its gorgeous picturesque views and its blue water beaches, it’s understandable why this place is the most visited island in Greece. Santorini’s architecture is actually representative of the blue and white flag of their country. With the blue rooftops symbolizing the sky and sea and the white structures for purity.
There is a lot to explore while visiting Santorini besides just laying on the beach. There is a breath taking hike that spans about 5 miles between two of this islands major cities from Oia to Fira. Day cruises, an open air cinema, and fantastic food obviously Santorini is not to be missed.
Perhaps one of the coolest things to see while on this magnificent island is to see what some say is the real-life Atalantis. Over 3,000 years ago, a volcano erupted, sinking part of the island underwater. But, there are still ruins like Pompei in the city of Akrotiri to explore. This part of the island is a commonly missed spot by many tourists and would be a great day trip to visit if you are looking for something different. Is Santorini your dream island getaway?
If not Santorini, Maybe Mykonos
If Santorini is the good child of the family, Mykonos would be the wild child. With equally gorgeous blue waters, Mykonos is known for its spectacular nightlife and amazing music scene. You can enjoy this city till the sun comes up (not sure if this is the same during covid), and not feel in danger because people surround you. It’s a great place to meet locals and other travelers.
But, Mykonos is so much more than just a party city. They have beautiful windmills, accents ruins of Delos Island, incredible art, and exciting Vespa tours to take you around this great city. It’s also a smaller island, so you can see a lot more in a few days, unlike Santorini. Since I want to fit in as much as possible on these shorter adventures, this may be the stop you want to see.
The highlight for me, though, is Little Venice. A part of the island that lays right on the shoreline of Mykonos. With spectacular views, this looks like one of the most beautiful spots in Mykonos. There are car-free alleys to explore and great food and shops. This will be a must-see if you send me to the beautiful island of Mykonos.
