Minnesota is not only where I am from but also home to two of my favorite artists. I am, of course, talking about the princess of MGM, Judy Garland, and the artist now only known as Prince. And BOTH have tours of their former homes just miles from where I currently live. So this week is all about the battle of the Minnesota legends.
Judy Garland, Grand Rapids, Minnesota
Judy Garland was born Frances Gumm in Grand Rapids, Minnesota. And can you believe it? Her childhood home still stands. The city of Grand Rapids has turned her home into the Emerald City of museums that highlights all things, Judy. Including some of her most famous movie memorabilia. From a Wizard of Oz screen test dress to an original Andy Warhol of Miss Garland herself, this is a must-see for any Judy fan (Me), and a nostalgic look into the history of Tinsel Town.
Prince, Chanhassen, Minnesota
Prince obviously is a musical icon and one of the few artists that stayed true to his hometown roots. Even after all his success, he made his home in Minnesota and built his recording studio, Paisley Park. Shortly after his death, his estate opened the doors to Paisley Park to allow his beloved fans to get a glimpse into this mysterious musician’s life. Costumes, instruments, and iconic photos are just a few things we can expect to see on this grandiose tour, and any true Prince fan (Me) would be ecstatic to see.
The Princess or Prince?
So, which one will it be? The icon and princess of MGM studios, Judy Garland? Or musical legend Prince? Both gone too soon but left a legacy behind that I would be honored to learn more about. Vote below and let me know. Because it’s not just my adventure, but OUR adventure.
*This will be the last vote till I am officially on the road June 7th. The local adventures have been fun, and I learned somethings I need to fix to make this an adventure we can enjoy together. I will be continuing to post until then, but mostly about my journey to living a nomadic life, some travel tips, and a few guest posts from other travel bloggers. Thanks for taking part in these local travels, and I can’t wait to take you all overseas with me in a few weeks (I can’t believe I am leaving so soon!!!)
