Deciding where to stay in Salzburg isn’t hard. Salzburg isn’t the biggest city, and even if you choose to stay outside the center, you can find some great places that are just a short 15-minute walk to all the sites of this beautiful city. But, Salzburg isn’t cheap, and finding a great deal is hard to come by, especially if you are visiting during peak season. So I put together a small guide of where to stay for all budgets.
- This page uses affiliate links. That means at no extra cost to you, I may receive a small commotion if you book after clicking on one of the links.
- As you know hotel prices flucuate. The prices listed are not set in stone. The further you book out from your planned stay, the better deals you can find I have personally found.
Staying in Salzburg Center
Obviously, in an ideal world, residing in the center for your trip is ideal. And this is possible if your budget allows it. But, you should plan on spending anywhere from $80 to $250 a night. Unless, of course, you are okay with staying in a shared hostel room, then you can find a bed for around $25. These are summer, weekend prices. During the week, it may be a little cheaper, but not much. Off-season, it’s almost half the price on some of these hotels and hostels.
The Cheap Traveler – a&o Salzburg Hauptbahnhof is a hostel located in the Center with shared dorm rooms costing around $25, and you can get a private room for about $75 if booked early enough. They claim on their site that it is cheaper to book directly from them, but Hotels.com is a little less if you are looking to save a few bucks.
The Moderate Traveler – Lasserhof Salzburg is a step up from a hostel. Their website is a little hard to navigate, but they claim if you find a lower price elsewhere, they will match it. As much as I like a commission if you click on these links and order, if a hotel is willing to do this to stay afloat, I will promote them. Especially after the hit, the industry got with covid. But, looking across the platforms, Hotel.com was still the cheapest.
The Fancy Traveler – Hotel AM Mirabellplatz is located next to the beautiful Mirabell Gardens and has fantastic reviews. This was a situation where I found it cheaper to book directly from the website than a booking site. Almost $200 cheaper. But, it’s still around $600 for a three-night stay.
AirBnB’s in the center is going to cost around $100 a night.
Staying Outside The Center
I stayed outside the center. Like I said before, Salzburg itself is relatively small, and if you don’t mind a 15-30 minute walk to get to the sites, you can find some affordable places to stay. The only negative is once you’re out of the center, finding a place to eat is limited. That being said, buying a bag of groceries while you stay can fix that problem and save you some money.
Cheap Traveler – Wolfgang’s is a hostel about 1 mile out of the city. If you are okay with dorm rooms, you can book directly from their site for about $22 a night. This was cheaper than all booking sites, including hostelworld.com. A private room, however, will set you back almost $100.
The Moderate Traveler – ibis Salzburg Nord is an economy hotel about a 20-minute walk from the center. This hotel will cost you around $65 a night. I have stayed in Ibis hotels before, and they are a bit hit and miss. But this one seems to be on the better side. Hotels.com and ibis website were around the same price.
The Fancy Traveler – Hotel Schloss Leopoldskron is the exterior for the backyard of the von Trapp family in the movie The Sound of Music. You know where the kids fall in the water? This is that home, now renovated into a luxury hotel. It’s priced at around $160, but worth it for the beautiful views and interior.
AirBnB’s go from anywhere from $25 to $100 depending on if you want the flat by yourself or are willing to share a space. I found a private room for $25 a night and was very lucky as he was booked for the rest of the season.
Staying In Salzburg
If you choose to stay in the center of it all or a little further out, you won’t be disappointed with a visit to Salzburg, Austria. These are just a few suggestions at different price points. Obviously, finding a place that accommodates what you want is most important. Read reviews and make sure it provides what you need. I don’t spend much time in my hotel, so a bed and a good internet connection are all I look for. But, for many, it’s a vacation, and if you want those extra amenities, by all means, splurge a little if you can. I hope this was helpful on what to expect to pay if you’re planning a trip to Salzburg.
