Because of Covid 19, traveling is out of the question for many of us at the moment. But, just because we are stuck at home doesn’t mean we can’t live vicariously through the magic of movies. This will be focusing on mainstream travel movies. I will make a list later of those movies that may not be as well known. So, let’s get started.
1: Before Sunrise
Out of any on this list, this is probably my favorite of all travel movies. Two travelers meet on a train on their way to Vienna, but they only have till Sunrise before going to their next destination. Ugh. This is the kind of thing that only happens in my head. Whenever I take a train, I end up by a giant man dripping in sweat and reaks of body odor. This film is great and mostly improvised, but it is also a love story to Vienna, a place I have yet to go. But, you can bet your ass I will be there next summer. Honestly, this movie isn’t for everyone as there is not much to it. Just two people getting to know each other on one romantic night. But it really is worth a watch. Oh, and there are two follow-up movies too.

2: Wild
As I write this, I am actually watching this movie. I really love this movie, and Cheryl Strayed is one of my favorite authors. “Wild” makes me want to hike the Pacific Crest Trail (which is what the movie is about), but I am quickly shot back into reality and realize I and the outdoors don’t really get along. CRAP! She just encountered a rattlesnake as I write this. Nope, I am not going on that hike. Anyways, it’s superbly acted and is really a great story about finding yourself and facing your past. Oh, and Laura fricking Dern is in it, so that makes it worth it right there alone.
3: Eat, Pray, Love
Okay, I know, it’s a cliche movie to put on your favorite travel movies, but I love it so much. I’m a sucker for what many would refer to as a “chick flick” (are we still aloud to call them that). I love Julia Roberts and I think it is so beautifully shot. Like I would totally go on one of those group “Eat, Pray, Love” travel tours. I also think it is a really good story. I loved the book and I loved the movie just as much. If you don’t know what the movie is about, well basically first she eats, then she prays, and then she loves. So good and so worth it.
4: Call Me By Your Name
I don’t know if this is considered a travel movie. But a guy does travel from America to Italy, and they do travel to a few different parts of Italy. It really is a great love story and some of the best acting I have seen on film in a long time. But what I really love is the picturesque shots of Northern Italy. I didn’t spend much time up there, but this movie definitely inspires me to check it out. And I think if you watch it, it will inspire you too.
5: Priscilla Queen Of The Desert
I’ve saved the most fun for the last. Three drag queens travel across Australia in a bus, and it is everything you might think it would be. Fabulous costumes, catty dialogue, and the drama. Oh, it is wonderful. Seriously, there is just too much greatness in this movie. I can’t even express it. You have to check it out. I dream of sitting on top of a bus with 20 feet of flowing fabric trailing behind me as we speed down an empty road.
