So obviously when you travel, there are things you must take with you. Clothes, a phone charger, a bag are all things you need when heading out on your big trip. But, there are always those other things that aren’t necessarily a must, but definitely help for your next big vacation. I have put together a list of 5 travel nonessential items that I think every traveler should have with them.
1: Packing Cubes
For years I never understood the purpose of packing cubes. I thought I had the art of packing down to perfection. One day, a friend of mine headed off to Iceland, and I was over at her place while she packed. The amount she fit into her small bag (she never checks luggage) was truly remarkable to me. It also made her bag extremely organized. I immediately bought a couple for my next trip, and after using them, all I can say is, to quote my favorite Fleetwood Mac song, “Never Going Back Again.”
*I got my packing cubes from Nomatic, they are a little spendy, but there is a lifetime guarantee and much better quality than the cheap ones you find on Amazon.
2: Collapsable Water Bottle
I love this water bottle. It holds a good amount of water, and it folds up, so it doesn’t take up much room in your bag when you aren’t using it. This is also a great way to save money and help save the planet. And now you know…And knowing is half the battle.
*The one I bought doesn’t appear to exist anymore but click here for one that is very similar.
3: The Three In One Travel Utensil
If this is your first time reading anything I wrote, I am a cheap ass when traveling. When it comes to eating out, it’s no different. Don’t get me wrong. I love to sit down and enjoy a good meal on occasion. But, most of the time, I will stop by a little store and pick up a baguette and some cheese or a cheap pre-made meal or even bring something along I made myself. So this three in one utensil is perfect for bringing along with you when out seeing the sites. You can sit on the curb for a quick lunch and not worry about finding a plastic fork or knife at a grocery store.

4: The Shampoo Bar
I know that most places you stay when you travel will offer soap and shampoo. But, if you’re like me, you like to have a little bit of consistency when it comes to your morning routine. I started using a shampoo bar a few months ago, and I love it. I know I sound like Captain Planet at the moment, but one thing I love is the limited waste that comes along with it. No tiny plastic bottles that will end up in a dumpster somewhere. You can also get on the plane with your favorite kind of shampoo and not have to worry about the 3oz liquid restrictions. So that’s kind of awesome. I highly recommend them.
*I use the Trader Joe’s shampoo bar, which you can read all about here.
5: The Tiny Backpack
The final travel nonessential item on the list is something I have written about before, and that is the tiny backpack. It’s great when you are out seeing wherever you are for carrying your small travel needs. It also folds up into a small little pouch to give you plenty of room in your luggage. This is, in my opinion, the most important travel nonessential item on the list. Click here to see why.
